For those who may have missed this story- said to be Canada's Largest Case of Farm Animal Cruelty - involving the abandonment of almost 3,000 individual hogs. They were found in a "farm" warehouse after weeks of being left without water, without proper air circulation and without food. 500 died of starvation.
Many will say that this "extreme" case of neglect does not reflect the standard practices used to get pigs to market... Like these:
If you agree with killing and eating these creatures I can't apologize if the videos offend you.
If you still think pigs should be made to live and die to become your "food" you are obligated to know what this choice entails!

Thousands of "Little Doggies" Die in Heat - Neglectful Owners Compensated
Gosh this summer is a scorcher! The heat index in some parts of the country is up to 115 degrees. It's easy to see why someone leaving their air conditioned home, to drive in their air conditioned car, to shop the frigid meat isles in their air conditioned grocery store might not be aware that thousands of cows are being cooked live under the blistering sun in feedlots. Those that aren't killed are crowded into giant steel boxes to be driven sometimes for countless hours to their final destination. The insides of these transport trucks can also exceed 130 degree temperatures as well. All this of course is to bring fine folks their "humane" shoulders, ribs, rumps and steaks...

What I don't get is this: If someone leaves their dog in a situation which causes them to suffer from dehydration and die of heat exposure, most people would call it cruel and irresponsible. It would be neglectful and is illegal.
Yet, when ranchers cause the same types of deaths to thousands... They are financially compensated (with tax dollars), and society shrugs it's shoulders as a matter of little importance.
So why cry for one "little doggie" and turn all compassion away from the others?
Maybe it's something to think about next time you're cruising the wide open spaces of your supermarket's frozen dead animal parts section?
You do have choices to NOT participate in these deaths and killings you know...

Vegan Wisdom & Animal Justice
From Eternal Treblinka by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jewish Nobel laureate:
"We know now, as we have always known instinctively, that animals can suffer as much as human beings. Their emotions and their sensitivity are often stronger than those of a human being. Various philosophers and religious leaders tried to convince their disciples and followers that animals are nothing more than machines without a soul, without feelings. However, anyone who has ever lived with an animal - be it a dog, a bird or even a mouse - knows that this theory is a brazen lie, invented to justify cruelty.
From a friend:
Once you have met a cow (insert any animal here), looked into their sweet peaceful eyes, and acknowledged their spirit and desire of a happy, long life, you cannot do anything to harm them.
I have hope that you will go against the current, and become a voice for them!
From Donald Watson - Founder of the Vegan Society:
"We can see quite plainly that our present civilization is built on the exploitation of animals, just as past civilisations were built on the exploitation of slaves."

From Pythagoras, mathematician:
"For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."
From Virginia Messina, MPH, RD:
It’s true: You can eat a few animal foods now and then without raising risk for chronic disease. That’s not a reason to consume foods that are not required in the diet, have no unique health benefits, and can never fit into a lifestyle built on principles of compassion.

From Gary L Francione, The Abolitionist Approach:
“Never seek to be part of the mainstream. It is polluted with the very worst toxin: indifference.”
From : D. Raza
My food is grown on fields and trees, NOT in wombs and cages. From the child next door:
Animals are my friends... I don't want to hurt them.
From the complex to the simple. From the ancient to contemporary. From now till all the cages are empty:
"Thou shalt not kill" does not apply to murder of one's own kind only, but to all living beings; and this Commandment was inscribed in the human breast long before it was proclaimed from Sinai. ~Leo Tolstoy

Racketeering the American West: BP Oil, Cattle & BLM Horse Roundups
In 1971, Congress charged the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management with the stewardship of both the land and the Mustangs. These 2 videos show that not only did the Bureau failed horribly in that stewardship, but did so by colluding with big industry to destroy the very beings they were entrusted with protecting. The scandals are numerous and tawdry, the lies are plentiful and ludicrous, the attitudes are sadly predictable and the result is the wholesale destruction of the American people's culture and waste of the American people's treasure(read tax dollars) by their own servants.
The truth about the wild "protected" horses is that their land is being handed over to Big Agriculture (Corporate Cattle Ranches) and Big Oil, (British Petroleum), all at the expense of the U.S. Tax Payer and in violation of U.S. Federal Law.
I've heard it said many times and it bears repeating: If you like horses - Don't eat cows. And I add further: If you like animals - Don't eat them at all! Go Vegan
Horses to Slaughter: Anatomy of a Cover Up within the Wild Horse and Burro Program of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
A plethora of facts and investigative reports about the grim realities the Mustangs are facing at the hands of the BLM and their Corporate Mistresses.

My Policies...
I regretfully have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to provide some people with guidelines regarding acceptable language and demeanor on this blog.
I will not permit or tolerate any abusive, racial, sexist, age-ist, speciesist attacks aimed at me or any other contributor. If you have something valid to say, do so in a civil manner and your input will be respected. I reserve the right to delete any and all posts which do not follow these very reasonable, minimum standards that I request.
Until this point I have had no issue with visitors on this blog - It is unfortunate that such a small minority of undesirables cast such a bad light on those who are genuinely interested in honest debate.
To the trolls who are willfully ignorant and deliberately ugly - You are not welcome here. No comments on this post will be accepted. Thank you.

Follow Dairy Cow Diary on Twitter & Facebook - Vegan Advocacy
From Dairy Cow Diary:
A new life is born in a terrible, horrid prison .. but also a new activism site is born... These are the hopes for the newly created FaceBook group called Dairy Cow Diary.
As the name implies, there will be daily comments said on behalf of the cows who are the prisoners. We hope that their lives will be truthfully exposed and that doing so will counter the mythical images put forth by the milk industry. Our goal is to change consumer perceptions and make more vegans through the process of educating them to the truth about "happy cows".
Although although we'll aim for a base of "followers" on Twitter -

http://twitter.com/DairyCowDiary
Dairy Cow Diary fans do not need a Twitter account to participate from the FaceBook member pages... But we do need your membership and support here - And your helping getting the word out by "sharing" with friends. It's all for the animals... So, if you have suggestions on how to improve this effort of advocacy - The input is valuable to us all.
We think this is a rare opportunity to give dairy cows a voice amid the "noise" of the users, exploiters and facilitators. It is a chance to inform consumers of a carefully hidden reality. We all know it exists - By becoming a "fan" your support will help spread the word."There are great resources, information regarding health issues associated with consuming "cow's milk"; There are videos, photos, essays and lively discussions regarding all aspects of the dairy industry and the cow's that tell their side of the story.

Fireworks & Animal Rights - Celebrate a Humane Party!
For me... July 4th has now become a hollow celebration represented in the iconization of two things: mobs eating dead animals and brutes trespassing on everyone else's space with loud "bangs & booms" from fireworks.
I really dislike them more each year... They put my peaceful home in the center of what sounds like a battlefield! I hate the noise - So does every nonhuman member of my family! I can't imagine what it must be like for all the birds, possums, raccoons and others of US who don't like being assaulted with a nonstop barrage of explosions!
I'm also edgy that over this weekend billions of folks will gather round a fire, to char a piece of someone else... Perhaps even a whole someone else?- A piglet, bird or baby lamb on the spit? They will do this as an "honor" to "freedom"... But this freedom is hollow. It neglects justice to those who would most benefit from it's gifts.
I am not free because
All are not free!
There are still Others who pay the price of blissful ignorance, cruel domination... And frivolous "traditions"!
The more I think of it... Eating animals and fireworks have much in common with each other: They violate the rights of others. They have safety risks. And both are clearly not necessary!
There are alternatives to fireworks.
There are ethical remedies to nonhuman enslavement.
And dietary choices that extend fair treatment to All.
And for those feeling particularly patriotic today: There are even political options...
I know animal use is inhumane...
And because I embrace justice, I also think it's unAmerican...
The day may come, when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of tyranny.
-Jeremy Bentham
Happy 4th... And please live consistent with your values - Go Vegan.

Empty the Cages. Free the Slaves. Liberty to All Who Would Benefit!
Ethically, there can be no justification in enslaving animals.
As Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple wrote: "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white. Or women created for men."
It doesn't have to be this way -
Please help to empty the cages.
The first positive step to do so is to Go Vegan.
