A Vegan's Meatless Monday Tale...

She Assumed I Wasn't Vegan
And That's Alright With Me
I've had a change of mind about Meatless Monday... There I was in Walmart, waiting in the checkout line... When a woman commented on my buggy items: Almond Breeze, black beans, a bag of rice, etc.... She asked if I was trying that Meatless Monday "diet"? And she added that her family has been "on it" since last year... Apparently she found it so easy and economical that they now eat "meatless" 3 - 4 days a week... Working towards a "vegan" end.  I nodded nicely as she shared a favorite recipe... I think she was thrilled in educating me that "it" could be done!

No, I didn't have it in me to tell her I do "Meatless Monday" seven days a week... I thanked her for the  recommendation and encouragement. She was happy enough to guide an "innocent" bystander. She was empowered - And I wasn't about to take any of that away!

Don’t just throw up your hands and say, “I can’t find vegan bread, so I may as well eat steak.” Don’t whine, “It’s too hard.” Just make the effort.~Elaine Vigneault

Why I Don't Drink Cow's Milk or Eat Diary - Get Weaned - Go Vegan

Not even a day has passed since they took him from his mother. If he is an "industry standard" veal calf, he was removed from his mother on the same day he was born. This poor creature cannot even walk yet, and is already on the short walk to his own premeditated extermination. When they do the math, his life is worth very little, since his mother has been designated a "milk cow", not to mention that the lucrative milk that makes her breast swell to feed and nurture HIM, will be consumed by adult HUMANS. And this recently born piece of garbage with no immediate lucrative value will soon be dispatched to a dark , tiny crate, to be chained to the ground for 3-4 months, fed a nutrient-deficient diet ON PURPOSE so he becomes anemic and weak at the hour of slaughter; Since it's just like that - weak, anemic and tender - that's the way the craven, two-legged devils like to salivate over and savor their precious veal... Sounds like a terror film? A nightmare? Maybe now you understand why so many people are jettisoning meat AND DAIRY PRODUCTS from their diets forever. Maybe its time for YOU to reevaluate your eating habits, and your way of thinking... ~~~Anthony Botti

VIDEO FOR ALL UNREASONABLE MEAT EATERS

Sometimes you just have to get blunt to counter the irrationality spewed by "anti-vegans":

DELICIOUS ~ NUTRITIOUS ~ VEGAN FOOD ~ Eat 4 Life!!!

On discussing what we "need" to eat... And what is "necessary" to consume... My "food" sustains me well:

A plant based diet IS delicious... IS nutritious. And IS the right choice for even more reasons:
"...Earth is generous, With her provision, and her sustenance, is very kind. She offers, for your table, food that requires no bloodshed and no slaughter." ~Ovid

Truth in Jest - Animal Rights via Don Piraro -

There's many ways one can bring the issues of Animal Rights into the spotlight... And each advocate uses their talents accordingly.
Hats off to Don Piraro for cleverly revealing the not-so-funny side of animal "use": My way of joking is telling the truth; that is the funniest joke in the world. ~George Bernard Shaw

Dairy & Drugs - Antibiotic Residue in Cow Meat & "Beef"

Is Doug on drugs???
About 2 years ago a friend and neighbor became extremely ill... First, it started with what doctors thought were allergies... But then they turned into flu-like symptoms - Some days Doug couldn't get out of bed! He also developed digestive problems... But we attributed that to the lack of fiber when he went on the "Atkins Diet".

Yeah, that's right, his new diet and illnesses coincided. His runny nose, constant cough, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, muscle aches and face swelling all happened once his main meals consisted mostly of meat. Specifically "hamburger" and "cow meat".

Anyway - For nearly 2 years the doctors are stumped to find drugs to help rid Doug of his ailments... In fact, his symptom have only escalated.

But now I see this report: FSIS RESIDUE VIOLATION INFORMATION For Week Of Jan 14, 2010. This 110-page list includes almost 900 names of dairy businesses that have been cited for infractions. And the Cattlenetwork says "Not only does this list present a negative image for the cattle industry, it is a target for increased scrutiny from industry critics. We must eliminate antibiotic residues in food animals and make this list go away. This is an issue that must be taken seriously. The reputation of individual producers and the entire livestock industry is on the line."

I'm no chemist be here are some of these antibiotics and drugs found in these poor murdered calves and cows:

AMPICILLIN, FLUNIXIN, GENTAMICIN, TULATHROMYCIN, NEOMYCIN, PENICILLIN, OXYTETRACYCLINE, TILMICOSIN, DESFUROYLCEFTIOFUR, TETRACYCLINE, SULFAMETHAZINE...

I mean... How SICK are these "healthy" animals anyways?

"Industry critic" - (that would be me)... Will be sending a copy of this report to Doug. He might get some answers as to why none of the pharmaceuticals he's been prescribed are working... Sure, I know the industry will say that everything is "safe" because these "products" never reached the market... Hum - Just like the "recalled meat" that was fed to school kids.

I certainly can see why Doug's "two all beef patty" diet may have really compromised his health and immune system! Maybe this information is just what he needs to GO VEGAN!

Fire Veterinarians Who Eat Animals - Hire a Vegan!

You'd think that animals would have a friend in a veterinarian... That all animal doctors would be a Dolittle of sorts...
Sadly, it's not the case at all... According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the first of principle for developing and evaluating animal welfare policies is: The responsible use of animals for human purposes, such as companionship, food, fiber, recreation, work, education, exhibition, and research conducted for the benefit of both humans and animals...
**********************
So the primary duty a vet has is to insure the "use of animals for human purposes"... As tasty sausages, burgers and nuggets, as furs, leather and woolen mittens, as circus amusements, rodeo toys, as greyhound racers, as zoo specimens, as Triple Crown contenders, as carriage pullers, as 4H spectacles, as hunting things, as dog, cat and pony show personalities... Oh yeah, and as guinea pigs -
**********************
And you know... That got me to thinking about my recent visit to the vet. Imagine how uncomfortable I was when my vegan dog Backus was being treated by a leather wearing, meat eating vet??? It just doesn't make sense that I should be supporting someone who's in a profession to help animals... Yet condones and patronizes the institutions that needlessly kills them! Nope. No sense at all.
**********************
That's why I'm firing my vet... It may take some time... But I really don't want an animal "doctor" who eats and wears animals too! I'll be searching my area - I know there must be vegan vets around. And I really think it's the consistent thing to do if I am to advocate for animal rights... I certainly want a vet that does the same! Fire your omnivore vet! Hire a vet who really respects and values the lives of their patients --- Employ a vegan instead!

Hurling Random Insults to Hunters - And Don't it Feel Good!

Today a friend of mine had minor hand surgery and needed transportation home... While in the waiting room, this elderly guy, and his toothless wife sat next to me. The way he was wheezing, I wondered if he wasn't there for some kind of COPD or breathing disorder... Anyway, he was wearing a dingy t-shirt that had some kind of pro-hunting message on it - So it wasn't surprising when he whipped this out to read: Get this... as he's doing so - His wife actually pulls the coffee table closer to put her feet on it! Just like they were in their trailer! Gosh I wish she had worn something other than toe-less sandals...

So, finally they have their appointment and depart... The geriatric heavy breather leaves his magazine behind... Well, you know --- with some idle time and a magic marker I just had to have my say... Yeah, the pages were filled choice photos too... One article says "It's just like being a parent... You can't help but brag".

But I did learn a few thing though... I already knew about all the deer farms. The ones that operate like a factory. Genetically modified buck sperm. Artificially inseminating does; Removing fawns to nurse on supplements. The antibiotics, tagging... Well you know, it's just kinda like another "livestock" industry... Gotta keep making them in order to require the taking of them!

But there was some information about planting plots to attract these deer... One ad says "Deer season starts in the spring". These "farmers" soon to turn killers grow alfalfa and clover. They also plant chickory, soybeans, corn, and 40 different strains of legumes. WoW - And I'm thinking... Hey that's my food, and I even have a hard time finding that kind of variety!

Anyway... I thumb through towards the back pages --- And what-do-you-know... With all the macho, he-man -rubbish these guys espouse... Seems they have "teenie" problems: Looks like all the ads were directed to the most marketable audience: You know boys --- They say diet has a lot to do with libido... From an erection stand point, anything that's good for your heart is good for your penis," says Dr. Mulhall. Too much saturated fat can, over time, clog arteries and, in doing so, prevent an adequate flow of blood from reaching the genital region. This not only interferes with the ability to perform, but also with sexual pleasure. Maybe the venison isn't working for you?

Oh yeah... And my friend is fine. I left a stack of vegan brochures... And the magazine? Wonderful lining for the litter box! :)
